boys and their sisters

I. Love. Scissor. Sisters.
I. Love. Pet. Shop. Boys.

Okay, the quality of this video may not be great, but I love the taper for recording it for posterity. (Unfortunately, it's on its side, so if you decide to tip the screen, be careful!)

It's funny how Pet Shop Boys suddenly started turning up everywhere I looked. My rediscovery of their music started early last year. Before that of course I loved plenty of their songs, but let's face it, before Rufus Wainwright (Before Rufus, or BR = anything before July 25th, 2004) I wasn't really into any music. Pretty soon Rufus was performing Casanova in Hell with them at the Mermaid Theatre, the recording was published as a live album, Concrete, Neil Tennant was executively producing Rufus' new album Release the Stars (out May 15th) and the Boys were performing with the Sisters for charity as per above video.

Love comes quickly
whatever you do
you can't stop falling
-- Pet Shop Boys - Love Comes Quickly

It can’t come quickly enough
And now you’ve spent your life
Waiting for this moment

-- Scissor Sisters - It Can't Come Quickly Enough

the carpenters

Don't worry, I haven't lost the plot - not completely anyway - although by Jove that girl could sing!

I just watched Todd Haynes' movie Superstar: The Karen Carpenter Story, or should I say Todd Haynes' banned movie Superstar: The Karen Carpenter Story. Because Richard refused to release the rights to the Carpenters' music.*

It's all played out with Barbie dolls - and Ken dolls for the male characters, don't worry. I've been looking to find it for ages and now I've finally got it. And love it.

* don't worry, Richard, I don't like your songs, I'll try my best not to listen to them...

not gay yet...

...but Donnie Davies save my soul!

  1. Rufus Wainwright is performing more tributes to Judy Garland. I hate not being able to go and am scouring the internet for snippets of audio/video.
  2. Neil Tennant appeared on stage with Scissor Sisters Sunday night. Someone is sending me a video today!
  3. To play my Mika album earlier I had to take a Maria Callas CD out of the player.

I rest my case.

accusations

Do you sometimes feel that the world around you conspires to force you on to a certain subject? I had one of those experiences today.

Yesterday I got involved in a discussion on the
Mika Fan Club forums not about Mika's sexual orientation but about whether we should discuss his sexual orientation on that board.

What got me really worked up was the way some people explained why they felt there should be no discussion at all. To me it sounded a lot like they felt they had to defend him from being open to "accusations" of being gay.

You accuse someone of being a murderer or a child-molester.

Mika of course has consistently refused to discuss his sexuality, preferring to stay deliberately ambiguous. The cynic in me wants to applaud him for generating lots of extra publicity...

Some time ago
Joe. My. God. blogged about Tom Cruise being the new Messiah - I only got round to reading it today, though. His suggestion that Tom is gay (and a bottom) rubbed one of the readers the wrong way.

comment 1:
There have been rumors about his sexuality, non (sic) proven. I think
it is pretty nasty to suggest he is something he's never been proven to be.

Which led to this reply:

comment 2:
Calling someone gay isn't necessarily an attack, and I think it takes
some internalized homophobia - whether personal or collective - to see it as
such.

I don't think it's internalised* homophobia in the case of those Mika fans. I don't think they even realise what it is at all...
(* This is a mistake in the original. I meant to say that I suspect it's not homophobia at all, internalised or otherwise, but rather ignorance.)

To finish off, in a spot of gratuitous self-promotion, here's a little exchange between my friend Kevin and myself at the Mika Fan Club board.

Kevin:
How many hints do you need?

Does he have to literally burst into flames whilst singing Judy Garland in a Dior gown?

me:
Kevin, I can definitely see him in Givenchy as Miss Holly Golightly...

PS. Not even Rufus Wainwright went as far as the Dior dress whilst singing Judy's songs... He's "doing it again" at the London Palladium tomorrow night.

old friends

I'm feeling down today. I've been thinking about a friend, someone I betrayed in a very bad way, and how because of that I can't be there to support him on days like today.

So yeah...

meth and man ass

After three weeks of intensive counseling it has been anounced that disgraced pastor Ted Haggard is now "completely heterosexual" again. (read more here)

If you can't be bothered to click the link, Haggard was exposed by former prostitute Mike Jones after the two had a three-year affair during they would meet, do drugs and have sex.

At the time Paul Hipp wrote a little ditty that sums it up pretty nicely. You can
listen to it here. I'm copying the lyrics as posted on that site:

METH AND MAN ASS

I BEEN PREACHIFYING MORALIZING EVERY DAY
TRYING TO GET ALL LOST SOULS TO COME MY WAY
CAUSE I KNOW WHAT YOU SINNERS LACK
AND I KNOW WHAT YOU NEED
A BACK RUB FROM A MUSCLE MAN AND GODSPEED

(CHORUS)

GIVE ME METH AND MAN ASS ON A SUNDAY MORNING
METH AND MAN ASS SURE AS I AM BORN AGAIN
METH AND MAN ASS I DON'T NEED NOTHING MORE
JUST METH AND MAN ASS AND WE'LL PRAISE THE LORD

(CHORUS)

THIS TRAIN DON'T TAKE NO SINNERS
NO MURDERERS, NO THEIVES, NO GAYS
YOU ASK ME WHAT KEEPS THIS TRAIN RUNNING SMOOTH
WELL, I'LL BOW MY HEAD AND SOFTLY SAY

(CHORUS)

IF A MAN LAYS WITH A MAN AS WITH A WOMAN
THE BIBLE SAYS SO SHALL HE BE KILLED
IF A MAN SNORTS A GRAM WITH A MALE PROSTITUTE
SOMEONE'S COLLECTION BASKET'S GETTING FILLED

(CHORUS)

I'M LOOKING FOR SOMEONE TO TURN THE OTHER CHEEK
I'LL GO ON LARRY KING AND TELL HIM "LARRY, I WAS WEAK"
DELIVER ME FROM EVIL AND DELIVER ME FROM GREED
DELIVER ME A HOT STUD AND A COUPLE GRAMS OF SPEED

(CHORUS)

let it snow

So I was watching this terrible, terrible, and yet funny movie earlier, and when it was over and I looked up, it was snowing. Big, heavy, clumpy, wet flakes. They'll never last, but at least for a little while everything got a nice dusting.

Close-up of tree in front of the house.

Street in the distance.

Ye olde church spire...

suspenders

Oops, I meant suspense...

There's this thing I do, when I'm watching TV or movies, especially because I almost never watch anything as it goes out, so I watch them here, on my computer, or on DVDs.

I was watching QAF USA and I didn't know whether Emmett was going to get his brains fucked out or bashed in. There was so much, sexual, tension... So what do I do? Pause and go get some coffee, of course! Then I put it back on and before the big moment of revelation I rewind and watch the scene again from the start.

So why do I do this? Do I get distracted? Do I like the suspense? (Not in the Hitchcock sense of the word - and I hasten to add it's not always about sexual tension either, although I'll admit to frequently…) I don't know. It can't be because I'm worried it'll get too explicit, I know that much. ;-)

grand opening

There won't be a grand opening, I'm afraid. In fact, I'm not writing this when it's posted. What does that mean? This is an example of antedating, in this case giving the post a date that lies a month before its actual creation.

Why am I doing it? Because this way I can control the order in which posts are archived. About a month ago I started to post a few observations at another place (which shall remain nameless) but I soon found that there were a few problems with it that started to itch at the back of my mind no matter how hard I tried to ignore them. Some trivial, some more substantial, perhaps over time part of it will become clear. Completist that I am, I am transferring the handful of posts I made on that site to here.

I don't feel like a bad person, but what I have done with my life wasn't always good. I'm hoping that eventually I'll be able to post about that too, but that's for later.
